Marine killed in weekend wreck

A Camp Lejeune Marine headed home on leave died in a traffic collision over the weekend.

Lance Cpl. Gregory M. Suedmeyer, 21, of Huntsville, Ala., was killed Saturday when a wrong-way driver collided with his vehicle on Interstate 20 in Douglas County, Ga., according to authorities. His wife, Katelyn Suedmeyer, 19, who was also in the car is in critical but stable condition, according to authorities.

According to information from 2nd Marine Division, Suedmeyer, who was headed home on leave, was an assaultman assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion.

He joined the Marine Corps in November 2007 and was promoted to the rank of lance corporal on January 1, 2009.
He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2008 to May 2009.  His awards include the Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

According to AP reports, Cobb County police are expected to file charges against the driver of the other car, Bruce Joseph Quayle, 71, of Villa Rica, Ga. Prior to the wreck, Quayle’s driving had prompted 911 calls from other drivers.

Quayle is listed in stable condition.
