Democrats cruise through Kinston, Trenton

With less than a month remaining until Election Day 2008, a busload of Democrats will be cruising through Kinston and Trenton on Wednesday morning to meet voters.

The event - billed as the Democratic Council of State Tour - will be at Grainger Stadium from 9:15-10:45 a.m. and at the Trenton courthouse from 11:15 a.m.-noon. Joining N.C. House Representative Van Braxton on the tour will be Tilden Hagan, son of U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan and Emmett Perdue, the son of N.C. gubernatorial candidate Bev Perdue.

The tour will also feature Democrats running for non-partisan judicial seats, including Jim Wynn, John Arrowood, Cheri Beasley, Kristin Ruth and Sam Ervin IV.

"The state party is doing this to give voters a chance to meet these candidates they might not have the chance to meet," Kinston Democratic strategist Rita Spence said. "This is a chance for these candidates to meet everyone in eastern North Carolina."

The tour begins at 7:30 a.m. at Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro. After visiting Kinston and Trenton, the tour will continue to the Craven County Democratic Party Headquarters in New Bern (12:30-2 p.m.) and the Pamlico County Democratic Party Headquarters in Bayboro (2:30-4 p.m.).

The events of the day will conclude at Jaycee Park in Morehead City at 5:30 p.m., where a cookout and rally will be held until 7:30 p.m.

Former N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Britt Cobb will be speaking on behalf of presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama at every stop.

"The entire day will be an excellent opportunity for the voters and candidates to meet in a very relaxed setting," Spence said. "It should be a great day."
