Lejeune Marine dies in single-car wreck
Updated at 12:24 on June 3 to include information on Levi Gundy's military service.
A Camp Lejeune Marine died early Sunday morning after his vehicle overturned.
Sgt. Levi Gundy was driving down Dawson Cabin Road at approximately 3 a.m. when he went into a curve "exceeding a safe speed," said Sgt. Randy Moreau with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Gundy was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Gundy, 22, died of severe head trauma.
Gundy, of Keokuk, Iowa, joined the Marine Corps on June 14, 2004 and served as a combat engineer with Marine Air Wing Support Squadron 272, according to New River Air Station officials.
Gundy deployed twice, once in February 2006 and again in August 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
His awards include the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, a Certificate of Commendation, a Meritorious Mast, and two letters of appreciation.
Moreau did not know if alcohol was a factor.
"We've got to wait for the medical examiner report," he said.
The passenger in the vehicle, Panayiotis Spanos, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck was not injured.
"He was fine. He was walking around the scene and released," Moreau said.
