A new year meant a big change for one business in Kinston — and the change of scenery has been nothing but positive.
Tripp’s Tires and Service Center Owner Darryl Mervin said he moved his business Jan. 3 from 310 E. Highland Ave. to 1501 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., at the former Superflow Fast Lube location.
Mervin said he had been at the old location for 12 years and wanted to move to a bigger location at a busy thoroughfare to attract new customers.
“I had a lot of clientele that passed away in the past couple of years, and I wasn’t getting any replacement because we were out of the public eye,” Mervin said. “We’re more in the public eye now.”
Mervin said the move has paid off and sees business continuing to grow.
“Yes (we’ve been busy), and we are going to have to hire somebody,” Mervin said.
Mervin said he hopes customers stop by for whatever repairs their cars may need, with a few exceptions.
“We do minor tune-ups, we do tires, brakes and minor engine work,” he said. “We pretty much cover everything except replacing motors. We do not replace engines or anything like that.”
Mervin also said those who get their vehicles serviced at Tripp’s will also get a free car wash from Super Clean Carwash right next door.
Mervin said the roomier location now allows Tripp’s to also offer U-Haul rentals.

Chef and the Farmer, though still closed due to damage from a fire last month, was honored by AAA Carolinas and was one of only eight restaurants in Central and Eastern North Carolina to win an award for “superior quality and service.”
This is the second time has won the Four Diamond award by AAA Carolinas.
“AAA’s requirements for a Four Diamond rating are rigorous, and those that win it are among the best hotels and restaurants in the world,” said Dave Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas. “Only 3.5 percent of the more than 58,000 annual inspections conducted nationally result in a Four Diamond rating.”
Other Four Diamond award winners include Second Empire Restaurant &Tavern in Raleigh, The Left Bank in Duck, Carolina Crossroads in Chapel Hill, 1895 Grille in Pinehurst, Four Sqaure Restaurant in Durham, The Fairview Dining Room in Durham and Il Palio Ristorante in Chapel Hill.
