Hall earns three NCPA awards to lead Free Press contingent

Dawson, Herman, Clark also winners at Winter Institute

CHAPEL HILL — Three Free Press staffers and one who heads the Freedom Eastern North Carolina consolidated design desk brought home six North Carolina Press Association awards at the NCPA’s Winter Institute meeting Thursday night.

Free Press sports writer David Hall won three awards to lead The Free Press contingent at the Dean E. Smith Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Hall won a second-place award for sports news reporting for his coverage of the death of Grainger Stadium icon Delmont Miller. He also earned a third-place award for sports news reporting for his coverage of an East Carolina University football game.

Additionally, Hall — a multiple award-winning writer for The Free Press and The Havelock News — finished third in the sports column-writing category. Free Press Sports Editor Ryan Herman earned his first NCPA award this year in the sports column-writing category, finishing second.

Jon Dawson earned the paper’s only first-place finish in the criticism category for his weekly CD reviews feature. It’s the second time Dawson, who is also a Free Press columnist, has won top honors in the category.

The final local winner for 2009 was Freedom ENC desk chief Richard Clark, who earned a second-place award for graphics design for the sports section of The Free Press.

“We’re very proud of all our staffers at The Free Press, but it makes us particularly proud when they receive statewide recognition for their hard work,” Free Press Managing Editor Bryan Hanks said. “Ryan, David and Richard do a fantastic job with sports coverage and design for our paper, while Jon’s musical knowledge and sense of humor shines in his CD reviews.

“Congratulations to those four for their award-winning work in 2009.”
