New theater group holds auditions

The new theatrical group Ratio Theatre Company of New Bern is preparing for its second show.

Organizer Joey Infinito said Ratio is a non-union professional acting company.

Auditions for Proof, a 2001 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama and Tony winner for best play, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Epiphany School on Henderson Avenue.

There are four roles, two male and two female in the play, written by David Auburn.

In a release, Ratio described the characters and their  traits: Catherine, age 25 to 30, brilliant, quirky and endearing; Claire, Catherine’s older sister, age in her 30s, pragmatic and a yuppie; Robert, age mid-50s, world-renowned mathematicians who is losing his mental faculties; and Hal, age late 20s, a mathematician and teacher.

Those auditioning should bring a headshot photo, a resume, one dramatic and one comic monologue.

Rehearsals begin the week of Nov. 30. Rehearsals will be held on weeknights and weekends.

The performance dates are Jan. 9, 10, 15, 16, 17.

“On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician.

“Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind.

“Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness-or genius-will she inherit?”
