North Topsail power outage scheduled

Nearly 7,500 homes and businesses in the North Topsail Beach and Sneads Ferry area will be without power for a few hours this week.

Jones Onslow Electric Membership Corporation will shut down power in that area Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. to tie in a new transmission line from N.C. 172 to a new substation located on N.C. 210 in Sneads Ferry, said Steve Goodson, vice president of energy services at JOEMC.

Customers who will be affected should have received letters about the outage, Goodson said.

“All members served from our bridge and Sneads Ferry substations will be affected by this outage,” he said.

Areas involved in the outage include homes and businesses surrounding N.C. 210 to the Surf City town limits, N.C. 172 from Stone Bay to Virginia Lane, Old Folkstone Road to Tar Landing Road, and also New River Inlet Road, Goodson said.

“We know there is no good time to be without power, but we tried to pick a time near the end of the work day and also accommodate schools — as most students will be traveling home at that time,” he said. “The job needs to be done in the daytime — so we also had to allow for ample daylight for the crews performing the work to get the work accomplished.”

The work is not expected to exceed three hours, Goodson said.
