Recount changes nothing

DAILY NEWS STAFF

A recount of the primary election votes did not change the results, said Rose Whitehurst, director of the Onslow County Board of Elections, on Friday afternoon.

Six poll workers came in at 9 a.m. today at the Board of Elections in Onslow County to start Jeff Jones' requested election vote recount, and the process lasted until nearly 6 p.m.

Jones, a Republican who lost a primary bid in the race for a seat on the Onslow County Board of Commissioners, asked for the recount Tuesday.

Only the top five vote-getting candidates move on to the general election in the fall. Jones came in sixth, just nine votes behind W.C. Jarman.

Besides Jarman, the other Republican candidates for Board of Commissioners who will advance to the November general election are: Barbara Melton Ikner, Bill Keller, Paul Buchanan and Lionell Midgett.

They will face Democratic candidates Tony Padgett, Ernie Wright, John Burns, William T. Rouse Jr. and Don Sweeting.

The 10 candidates will be competing for five seats.
