16-year-old driver hurt in wreck on Spring Garden Road

A 16-year-old driver was injured Thursday night when her car overturned on Spring Garden Road and she was thrown out .

Trooper Steve Brown of the Highway Patrol said the driver, Paula Marie DuBois, who lives on Spring Garden Road, was taken to Craven Regional Medical Center but was expected to be sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

The accident happened about 9 p.m. near Wadsworth Lane about 10 miles north of New Bern.

Rescue officials said the driver was conscious and talking when they found her under her car.

Her car ran off the road across a deep ditch and stopped in trees about 12 feet from the pavement.

Tony Gatlin, public information officer for No. 9 Township Fire Company, said it appeared that the woman was driving north on Spring Garden Road when she lost control. Her car ended up facing in the opposite direction.

Brown said he understood that she had reached over to pick up something when she lost control.

Both lanes of Spring Garden Road were still closed at 9:40 p.m. but Gatlin said he expected the road to be reopened soon.
