JPD seeking Chevy SUV in hit-and-run death

Jacksonville police are looking for the vehicle they say was involved in a hit-and-run death of a woman early Tuesday morning.

A patrol officer found the body of a white female in the road on U.S. 17 south near the N.C. 24 overpass at 2:55 a.m., said Sgt. Chuck James with the Jacksonville Police Department.

"The preliminary investigation reveals that the victim had been struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene," James said.

Police believe the vehicle that struck the woman is either a 1999 to 2002 Chevrolet Silverado or a 2000 to 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban. The vehicle will have damage to the chrome grill and will be missing the gold Chevrolet emblem from the front grill.

The woman was last seen in the area of the Triangle Motor Inn prior to the hit and run.

The woman has been identified by authorities, but her name will not be released to the public until a next-of-kin notification, James said. 

Police are asking for the public's assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle in this case.

Crime Stoppers of Onslow County is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest or apprehension in the case.
