Sisters display works at the Greene County Museum

    Staff Writer

SNOW HILL — Family artistry will take the stage in Snow Hill this weekend as sisters Jackie McLawhorn and Karla Jennings gather at the Greene County Museum during a “Meet the Artists” opening reception Sunday.

The sisters will be on hand to answer questions and provide insight into their works from 3 to 5 p.m.

GCM President Sharon Ginn expects a large turnout for the free event.

“People who attend the reception will have an opportunity to meet both of the artists, hear their stories and also hear stories about the subjects of their paintings,” she said. “They will be able to see scenes from Eastern North Carolina through the eyes of the artists.”

The reception will serve as a kick-off for the “Sisters Artwork Collection” exhibit, which will be on display at the museum until Dec. 31.

“(Visitors) can enjoy the gifts of local artists and expose themselves to art through another’s eyes,” she said.

McLawhorn, who picked up a paint brush about 14 years ago, said she enjoys creating farm scenes and coastal landscapes.

After becoming interested in the watercolors at the age of 16, Jennings went on to pursue her newfound interest through art classes at Mount Olive College. She has also worked under the direction of Dan Morgan and Clara Flanagan at the Farmville Arts Center as well as Judy Dye at Pitt Community College.

Although neither sister makes their living by the paintbrush — McLawhorn is an office manager in Greenville and Jennings teaches honors math at Greene Middle School — they have sold their works at Sticks and More gift shop in Snow Hill.

Ginn said museum patrons will also have the opportunity to purchase several of the sisters’ works during the exhibition.

“Several of the painting are for sale and they will have the opportunity to purchase a piece of local art for their home at a reasonable price,” she said.

GCM is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The museum will be closed Nov. 26-30 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 24-28 for Christmas.
