Memorial Day weekend services, closings
Below is a list of travel information, and a schedule of holiday closings and services to honor veterans. If you would like to add a service to the list for the weekend, e-mail it to sjnewsroom@freedomenc.com.
Schedules
• State, county and city offices, closed Monday
• Post offices closed, no mail delivery Monday
• New Bern and county trash pickup as usual
• Banks closed Monday
• Twin Rivers Mall, open regular hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• New Bern and county parks open
• Craven Community College, closed Monday, but Saturday classes as usual
• Pamlico Community College, closed Monday
• Craven-Pamlico-Carteret County Library, closed Sunday and Monday
• All ABC stores in Craven County, except the Glenburnie Road location, are closed Monday
Services
Saturday
• Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11119 will hold a service at 10 a.m. at the Vanceboro Cemetery. The community is invited to the flag-raising ceremony, laying of the wreaths, roll call of departed veterans, placing of the flags and the playing of taps. The service is also sponsored by the Vanceboro Ruritan Club.
Sunday
• Military and law enforcement will be honored at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 309 New St. The public is invited.
Monday
• The Pamlico Veterans Council will hold its annual service at 11 a.m. at the Pamlico County Courthouse. All of Pamlico County's veterans' organizations will take part in the service, including American Legion posts 200 and 238, Disabled Americans Chapter 93 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8094.
The Pamlico County Honor Guard will post the colors. The speaker will be the Rev. Walter Graves. The public and all veterans are invited.
• The Craven County Veterans Council will hold its annual program at 11 a.m. The event will be at the New Bern National Cemetery. The cemetery is at 1711 National Ave., New Bern. Lt. Col. Clarence Harper, MALS-14 commanding officer, is the guest speaker. Gov. Beverly Perdue is scheduled to attend. The Havelock Community Band will provide music.
• The birthday of Caleb Bradham, the inventor of Pepsi, will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at Union Point Park. Bradham was born May 17, 1867. The concert is free and sponsored by Pepsi.
Travel
• AAA forecasts a 5 percent rise in travelers compared to the holiday weekend in 2008.
• Brendan Byrnes, a AAA spokesman, said a gallon of regular gasoline in North Carolina averages about $2.35, about $1.50 a gallon less than last year.
• Last year, nine motorists died and 534 were injured in traffic collisions investigated by the Highway Patrol during the holiday weekend.
• Lawmen will begin holiday patrols and checkpoints at 6 p.m. today and end them at 11:59 p.m. Monday.
