National Weather Service local flood forecast

Kinston could see Neuse River crest at 11-feet Thursday

Staff Writer

Neuse River water levels will continue to rise this weekend after Tropical Storm Hanna dumped more than 2 inches of rain in the Kinston region.

There were few reports of local flooding in both Lenoir and Greene counties. The National Weather Service issued several flood warnings today for areas - including Wake County - that received more rain than Kinston.

Kinston will see the Neuse River's water levels steadily rise during the next five days. The river's flood stage is 14-feet. NWS forecaster Sarah Jamison, who is based in Morehead City, said water levels in the Neuse River running through Kinston could reach 11-feet by Thursday.

It takes about 9 days for the waters in the Neuse River upstream near Raleigh to reach Kinston, she said. During the next 24 hours, Kinston could see the Neuse River's water level slowly rise by one-foot.

"We will keep an eye on the forecast next week," she said. "The first half of the week looks dry with little rain."
