‘Thank a vet'

Theme resonates during Salute ceremony

Staff Writer

“It’s a beautiful day,” Col. Adele E. Hodges said Saturday as she took to the podium during the ninth annual Salute festival’s opening ceremony.

Hodges, the first female commander of Camp Lejeune, served as the keynote speaker of the event that drew hundreds of locals to Pearson Park. She was not only referring to the sunny skies and pleasant temperature, but also to the magnificence of freedom.

“Veterans are why we are able to celebrate any type of event here in the United States,” she said. “We must remember it’s the veteran, not the politician, that protects our freedom.”

Kevin Collier, the 2009 Salute chairman, echoed Hodges’ sentiments, reminding the audience that “freedom is never free.” He said this the year’s theme — “Thank a vet” — should ignite gratitude.

“Whether a hug or a handshake, recognize them,” he said. “It’s the least that we — who have never served in the military — can do to honor our vets.”

Bonnie McLawhorn, a Salute committee member, said people should remember that basic liberties, such as freedom of speech, haven’t always been around. She said people should not take for granted those who have fought or continue to fight for liberty.

“These veterans gave their life or put their life on the line,” she said. “They should be honored and they should be thanked.”

Hodges, who currently serves at the Pentagon, urged the audience to show appreciation for current servicemen and women, but reminded everybody of the bloodshed of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Let us not forget our nations’ flag that drapes the coffins of our veterans who have served throughout the world,” she said.

Julia Eaton of Kinston said that even though she isn’t directly linked to the armed forces, she feels the event was a good opportunity to teach her two daughters a life lesson.

“I want my children to grow up with a sense of respect,” she said. “It’s important that we all take the time honor those who have paved the way.”

Pioneering was the name of the game for the late Ted Sampley. A local Vietnam veteran and founder of Salute, Sampley is known for this work involving veterans issues.

A wreath, which was carried by Sampley’s family during the veterans parade, was placed in front of the podium Saturday in memory of Sampley.

“It’s a shame he passed away so unexpectedly,” Sampley’s son, Lane Sampley, said. “But he’s still with us in spirit.”
