Storms pass through Lenoir County

Tornado warning issued Wednesday night for Duplin, Lenoir

Staff Writer

A tornado warning was issued for Lenoir County late Wednesday night as strong storms passed through the region.

Several homes were damaged near La Grange, according to Lenoir County Emergency Management Director Roger Dail. There were no other reports of serious damage from the storm.

Accuweather spokesman Tom Kines said the tornado warning was issued at about 10:30 p.m. until 11:15 p.m. Kines said despite the warning, there were no confirmed reports that a tornado touched down on the ground.

Kines said it was unusual to have a tornado warning issued in December. The humid air created the right conditions for tornado activity, he said.

Two homes at Little Wiggins Road and Breezy Point Drive sustained wind damage. Dail said a garage and shelter at these properties were damaged.

December picked up where November left off - with rainy conditions. Kinston saw above average rainfall in November with 8.86 inches of rain. The average monthly rainfall for November is 2.80 inches.

This weekend will be much cooler with temperatures in the mid 40s for Kinston. Kines said more rain is likely for the region Friday night and Saturday with clearing conditions expected for Sunday.
