Almost all the teams are nearby. The track is managed by the sport's most innovative showman, H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, and owned by the most colorful tycoon, Bruton Smith. Wheeler has been trying to figure out how to improve the track and smooth out its rough edges for years. Where "levigation" (a smoothing process) failed in 2005, a high-tech paving process succeeded wildly last year.
The track certainly needed a nickname: "the Beast of the Southeast,"
T-shirts and ballcaps available.
