Slocum Road wreck slows traffic

Havelock News

A three-car crash at Slocum Road and U.S. 70 kept traffic in the area bottled up for more than an hour this morning.

No serious injuries were reported in the 6:30 a.m. collision, according to police.

“At 6:30 in the morning, there are a lot of people trying to get to work on base and moving through the city,” Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus said. “It wasn’t good timing in that regard.”

He said rush-hour traffic immediately began to back up, and tow trucks needed to clear the vehicles from the road had a hard time reaching the scene.

“It was a matter of trying to clear it and trying to get traffic moving again,” Cyrus said.

Cyrus said Havelock police worked with Cherry Point security to try to get traffic moving as best as possible, but he pointed out that protocol must be followed at Cherry Point to guarantee security of the base.

Havelock police directed traffic until about 8:30 a.m.

The crash is still under investigation.
