Crash sends two to area hospitals
A two-car crash sent two people to area hospitals this morning.
The crash happened around 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Slocum Road.
One person was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, while another was taken to Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available, and their names have not been released.
The wreck happened when the driver of an eastbound Subaru passenger car attempted to make a left turn onto Slocum Road, the access road for Cherry Point's back gate. The driver turned into the path of a Ford passenger car heading west on U.S. 70, according to initial police reports.
The driver of the Ford was airlifted to Pitt Memorial.
Steam, apparently from a busted radiator, leaked from the Subaru, a four-door car that came to rest in the middle of the intersection.
The Ford car, also with damaged to the front end, ended up on the side of westbound U.S. 70, its front tire ripped and turned at an odd angle.
The bumper from one of the cars ended up in the median of the highway.
The wreck temporarily blocked lanes of both eastbound and westbound U.S. 70, causing some traffic delays.
The crash was the second at the intersection this morning. The first wrecked happened around 7 a.m. but resulted in no injuries.
