The town of Emerald Isle is under a boil water advisory.
Total coliform bacteria was detected in water samples collected from the water system operated by Bogue Banks Water Corporation, according to a press release from Frank A. Rush, Jr., the town's manager.
Generally, the bacteria is not harmful but is an indicator that other, potentially harmful microorganisms may be present. Residents, visitors and businesses are advised to boil water for consumption (which includes drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice and washing hands) as a precaution until additional testing can be done. Boiling water for one 1 minute should kill any harmful organisms that may be present. Infants below the age of six months and pregnant women should use an alternate water supply such as bottled water when possible.
The town is served by the Bogue Banks Water Corporation, a separate non-profit water system that also serves Indian Beach and Salter Path.
The advisory was issued Wednesday by the Bogue Banks Water Corporation and is in effect until further notification. For more information, please contact Bogue Banks Water Co 252-354-3307.
