DA to review case in fatal shooting

A report on this week’s fatal shooting on Harkers Island is now in the hands of the district attorney.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office has completed its report and turned it over Thursday to District Attorney Scott Thomas for review, said Chief Deputy Ken Raper.

The district attorney’s office will determine what, if any, action needs to be taken in the case. No charges have been filed at this time pending the review results.

Blake Hackworth, 45, of 144 Mary Ella Drive, died Sunday night at Carteret General Hospital after being shot in the head by his father.

Investigators have said that it appears to be a case of self defense.

Hackworth had reportedly been exhibiting combative behavior throughout the day and had made a lot of threats to his parents, whose names have not been released.

The shooting occurred after Hackworth went after his parents with a crutch and threatened to kill them, authorities said.
