Man accused of assaulting wife with a car

A New Bern man was arrested on Sunday and charged with assaulting his wife with a car.

Police arrested John Alvis Stewart, 27, of 205 Attmore Drive, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run driving.

Stewart was placed in Craven County Jail under $10,000 bail for purposely running into his wife’s car as she drove on U.S. 17 South early Sunday morning.

His wife told officers she had been out of the house late Saturday night, into early Sunday morning, and that when she got home her husband was not there. She said she went to look for him and was near Moore’s BBQ restaurant when Stewart drove up unexpectedly, crashed into her vehicle and left the scene.

She told police that she returned home and saw Stewart leaving.

Police searched for Stewart but were unable to locate him at the time but when he returned about 7 a.m. Sunday, police came and took him into custody.
