Atlantic Beach man killed in Wilmington wreck

WILMINGTON — A Carteret County man has been identified as the person killed in a four-car collision that occurred Monday night in Wilmington.

Moses P. Wheeler Jr., 68, of Atlantic Beach, was driving his Jeep Cherokee when he veered into oncoming traffic, sideswiped one car and crashed head-on into another, according to reports on the accident. A fourth car was also involved.

Wheeler died in the crash; and the passenger in his vehicle, 62-year-old Helen Cutler of Wilmington, was in serious condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, reports said.

The drivers of the three other vehicles were also injured, with one hospitalized and the two others treated and released from Cape Fear Hospital.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Market Street and Eastwood Road.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
