East Carteret edges Jones boys
Travonda Haddock dropped in 19 points to lead the Jones Senior girls’ basketball team to a 55-43 win over East Carteret on Friday.
Haddock also ripped down 20 rebounds. The Trojans grabbed 53 rebounds as a team, as Brittany Daniels and Ashley Brimage each had nine boards.
Jasmine Bender notched 12 points and Madelyn Philyaw eight.
“I’m really proud of these young ladies,” Jones coach Debbie Philyaw said. “We’ve had injuries that could have held them (players) back. But these kids have endured it and stuck together and we improved every game.”
The Trojans (18-2, 10-0) enter the Coastal Conference as the No. 1 seed, giving them a bye in the first round. The Trojans will compete in the second round, on Wednesday, at the school’s new gymnasium.
“Southwest and Lejeune are going to want this tournament also,” Philyaw said. “We have to play hard. An advantage is that we are playing at home.”
Trojans fall to Mariners
Jones Senior’s K.D. McCall scored 21 points and Miguel Foy added 11 and nine assists, but it wasn’t quite enough as East Carteret edged the Trojans to clinch the Coastal Plains 1-A Conference title outright.
East Carteret claimed a 57-53 win over the Trojans.
B.J. Bryant had six points, four steals and a block for the Trojans, who finish 4-16 and 3-7 in the Coastal Plain 1-A Conference. East Carteret, which was led by Matt Collins’ 15 points, end up the regular season 14-9 and 9-1.
