Hoops search goes on at ECU

Holland interviewing candidates to replace McCarthy

Freedom ENC

Initial interviews for a new men’s basketball coach at East Carolina could be finished as early as next week, ECU athletics director Terry Holland said Friday.

Holland, who, according to multiple sources, has interviewed former Auburn coach Jeff Lebo and former Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz, is searching for a replacement for Mack McCarthy.

Holland reassigned McCarthy to an administrative role on March 6 after three seasons as the Pirates head coach.

“We can’t comment on individual candidates,” Holland wrote in an e-mail to The Free Press. “I would hope that we can conclude our initial interviews by the middle of next week, but it is conceivable we may have to wait longer. We would like to conclude the process as soon as possible for obvious reasons.”

The day after McCarthy announced his new role, Holland said he expected the search to extend beyond the NCAA tournament.

Lebo, a former star at North Carolina, went 96-93 in six years at Auburn. Lutz, a native North Carolinian, went 218-158 in 12 seasons at Charlotte.

McCarthy went 34-57 at ECU, including one season as an interim head coach. His new position will focus on raising funds for a new basketball practice facility.
