Pamlico's senior night spoiled

Hollowell, Dunn, Riche, Caroon honored

BAYBORO – Allison Hollowell is proud to wear the black and gold.

That was evident when Hollowell talked about playing for the Pamlico Hurricanes after Friday night’s 50-36 loss to Southwest Onslow. Hollowell, the lone senior for the Hurricanes, was honored during Friday night’s contest.

“It’s meant a lot to play here,” said Hollowell, as tears began to fall from her eyes. “Living here and growing up here, seeing all the seniors before me, it’s meant a lot.”

The Hurricanes (1-18, 1-9) were hoping to give Hollowell a win as a present on senior night, but the Stallions (11-7, 7-3) spoiled that plan.

When Pamlico coach Jamie Gibbs pulled Hollowell from the game with 32 seconds to play, the crowd gave Hollowell a nice ovation. Heading to the bench wasn’t at the forefront of Hollowell’s mind.

“I wanted to keep playing,” Hollowell said with a laugh.

Gibbs said Hollowell, who finished with two points and eight rebounds, will be tough to replace next year.

“Her presence on the court, her hustle and her demeanor…you just don’t have an Allison Hollowell come through every day,” Gibbs said. “She is the perfect person. My hat is off to her parents because of that.”

Pamlico hung tough with Southwest Onslow early. Kenzie Davis, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds, was a big reason why.

The Hurricanes held an early 8-5 lead before a 7-0 spurt by the Stallions gave them the lead for good. Southwest held an 18-13 lead after one.

Lindsey Lee’s rebound-basket early in the second pulled Pamlico within 18-15. Southwest responded with a 10-3 run to grab a 28-18 lead. The Stallions were able to pull away from there.

Freshman Alazia Whitfield had 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Pamlico. Chelsea Sawyer added eight points before re-injuring her knee with 4:42 to play.

“That’s a devstataing blow,” Gibbs said. “Her season is done. We’re really going to miss her.”

Lee chipped in two points and six rebounds.

LaNeiya Burney and Janika Williams paced the Stallions with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Pamlico will play either Southwest or Lejeune in the first round of the conference tournament on Monday.

BOYS

SOUTHWEST ONLOW 62, PAMLICO 37

Seniors Jason Dunn, Aaron Caroon and Jamie Riche have meant a lot to the Pamlico program. The three were honored on Friday night, coming in a 62-37 loss to Southwest Onslow.

“I’m so proud of those three seniors,” Pamlico coach Earl Sadler said. “They’ve had some adversity through the four years but they’ve stuck it out. All three have worked extremely hard and they have carried themselves with a lot of integrity.”

The Hurricanes (6-14, 3-7) got off to a sluggish start against the Stallions (10-10, 7-3). Brandon Monk, who led all scorers with 17 points, had 10 in the first quarter to help Southwest grab a 22-8 lead.

“I just think it was men playing against boys,” Sadler said. “You look at every position and they out-weighed us and out-muscled us.

“It wasn’t from lack of trying because we got a ton of shots, but we didn’t shoot the ball well. Those nights are going to happen.”

Corey Wohlever (12 points), Jeffrey Williams (11 points) and Xavier Morris (11 points) also scored in double digits for Southwest.

Jaylen Fornes, a freshman, and Jermicus Brown scored nine apiece to pace Pamlico. Dunn, Isaiah Smoak and D.J. Lewis had five apiece while Terrance Heath and Bradley Bennett each had two.

The Hurricanes will play rival Jones Senior in the first round of the conference tournament on Monday. The site of the tournament will be determined Saturday. The teams split their games during the regular season. Whichever team wins will qualify for the playoffs.

“I’m expecting Jones Senior to play their best,” Sadler said. “I’m expecting us to play our best. It’s going to be a big game. Whoever wins that game goes to the playoffs.”
